Last week I introduced my new plan for incremental improvement. Today I’ve got to admit to just how incremental that improvement has been.
Project #1 in One Bite at a Time: 52 Projects for Making Life Simpler is to “Eat Your Frog.” I could have easily picked exercise, but part of the exercise I’m starting to do is a daily walk with the kids, and that doesn’t happen until after they’ve had breakfast and so it’s not the best choice for my do-it-right-away-and-get-it-over-with task.
But my specific physical-therapist prescribed exercises are. I need to do them when the kids aren’t awake and crawling on me or otherwise attached to my body. They’re quiet, so no worries about waking anyone who might still be sleeping. And I hate doing them, for no real reason other than I am a lazy person (there, I admitted it. The biggest reason I need to tackle challenges like this: I. Am. LAZY.)
Monday I did them. Tuesday I overslept after a rough night with baby girl not sleeping well and the next thing I knew both kids were up demanding food and suddenly it was lunchtime and oh, yeah, that’s why it’s supposed to be the first thing, because otherwise it’s way too easy for the entire day to get away from me and I don’t do it and then I’m back at the doctor’s office admitting I haven’t done my exercises since my last appointment. Sigh.
For Wednesday, just repeat Tuesday in the above paragraph.
Thursday I had a different frog – I had an errand that had to be done by 10:00, and I made it with seconds to spare. Sad how hard it can be to get something done by a not-very-early time in the morning, but such is my life with two small children.
Friday I had a different frog as well – to get online and pay a couple of bills that I’d forgotten about and needed to get out before naptime. So much of my time management/planning is done in the chunks of time using naptime and bedtime as gauges.
Saturday and Sunday were both a wash – I barely got up before the kids thanks to one or both of them getting up even more than usual during the night. I felt like a zombie most of the weekend.
Today is a fresh start. And R isn’t on call and his work schedule should (hopefully) be a little lighter so I should get a little more help with the kids in the evening and night which should (again, hopefully) help me to get out of bed in the morning before the kids need me.
This project is definitely going to be more than a one-week-wonder, get it done and crossed off my list type.
