Last week I described how I’d already done Project 2. If only all weeks would be so easy! (I’ve looked ahead at the projects; some are going to be quite challenging for me I can already tell).
I’m still easing into things however, because Project #3 in One Bite at a Time, is to establish a morning routine. As someone who’s been aware of Flylady for close to a decade, I know morning routines.
Or do I?
Tsh’s description of a morning routine as the things that fuel me the most, and the routine itself as something to treat myself to those things everyday was a new way of viewing a routine. Instead of the first set of tasks to check off my daily list, it becomes a way of energizing me.
What a refreshing idea.
I’ve got the basics of that in my daily routine already however, it just became a way to be more intentional about getting to them first, and not letting other tasks derail me from filling my own cup first.
So, my new routine, after basics are out of the way:
1) A big glass of water.
2) Breakfast and a cup of tea.
3) Time in the Word.
4) Daily devotions.
5) Another cup of tea and reading some of my current nonfiction book.
What comes to mind immediately when I read over my routine is that in order to start my day with the time to fuel myself the best, I *have* to get up an hour before the kids (or at least G). Feeling rushed as I read Scripture makes it almost pointless; it becomes an exercise in scanning the page as quickly as possible, instead of truly reading it and thinking about the words I’m seeing.
As I’ve put this new routine into practice these last few days, it’s been eye-opening the difference it has made in my mood. They’ve been some rough days, with two sick kids and full to do list, but it’s all seemed much more manageable somehow.
I think I need to put her words up where I can see them often:
Pick the things that fuel you the most, and faithfully treat yourself to those things, in the same order, every day.
Thanks Tsh. I needed that.
