Seven Quick Takes – House Edition

In honor of our runner-up house.

Why do I call it our runner-up house? Because we have been the second choice for FIVE buyers so far (sigh.) That makes me feel better that the two showings that gave negative feedback are definitely the exception, and it’s a good house that people like. Unfortunately people keep finding other houses that they like better (sigh.) So, six things that I love about the house and hope that the eventual buyers enjoy as much as I have.

The master bathroom. A semi-DIY project that we loved so much (does it truly count as DIY when it’s done with the assistance of your general contractor brother-in-law? probably not). Custom shower, raised vanity, and a beautiful pattern on the floor in a tile that I absolutely adored.

The dining room. Lovely morning light made it a fantastic spot for my quiet time.

The view from the nursery window. It spent five years as my office before being turned into a nursery when we had G-man, and I had my desk arranged so I could look out the window and see the gorgeous tree just outside. I never did learn what kind of tree it was, but it turned a stunning shade of red in the fall and made me happy to see it every day.

And nothing like writing a post about it to make me realize that despite living there for 7+ years I never took a single photo of the view from that window. I’ll have to remedy that the next time we go over there to check on the place or turn lights on or off for a showing. Unfortunately the tree has lost its leaves by now so the fiery red leaves won’t be in the photo.

The floors downstairs. We didn’t get to enjoy these long, as the brother-in-law installed them for us shortly before we left, but we wished we’d done it ages ago. The original floors were the sort that gives DIY a bad name – the previous owners installed them and did a terrible job, then they had a leaky washing machine that buckled the laminate and prevented the laundry closet doors from closing properly. Add in a few cracked and broken transition pieces and a couple of big gaps between pieces and you had a lousy floor. The new floors are still laminate (the neighborhood does not command prices that justify putting in hardwoods), but they’re installed well, there are no transitions between rooms, the floors are finished (unlike the unfinished pantry and laundry closet floors before), and it’s on an angle which I love.

The master bedroom closet. It is HUGE, running above the entire width of the two-car garage. It even has shelves lining part of one wall. It had more than enough room for clothes, luggage, laundry baskets, hobby materials (needlework supplies mostly), and lots of books. If it had had an outlet I would have probably put my computer in there, honestly, but didn’t want to run a power cord in for the computer and additional light I’d have needed. I loved that closet.

The park only a block from the house. It’s big with a walking path going around the entire park, and the closest part of the park to our house was … the woods and then the playground! How perfect was that I ask you? As an 18-month-old G-man could walk himself to the park, and would whenever he was outside. He knew the route (not that it was hard – go out front door, turn left. Turn right at the corner. Walk straight and cross street and you are there! It is just such a great neighborhood, I was very sad to leave it.
